Team Vindicta and Team Simul Litigators moots for the Sir Buri grand final moot competition.
Team Vindicta is the Petitioner for the case and Team Simul Litigators is the Respondent for the case.
The teams had 7 guest judges: Mr. Greg Sheppard, Principal at Young and Williams, Mr. Kenneth Imako, Partner at Allens, Ms. Igua Guba Senior Manager Legal at Westpac PNG, Mr. Philip Tauchi Lawyer at Young and Williams, Mr. George Kult Lawyer at Young and Williams, Mr. Desmond Kipa Principal at Wang Dee Lawyers and Mr. Israel Jabob Lawyer at Jema Lawyers.
Team Vindicta wins by presenting the case well on their criteria submission to the judges.
Lawyer Israel Jacob from Jema Lawyers encouraged the students after the moot that they need to read a lot to present their cases well in court.
“Keep going. There are no perfect litigators. Litigation is all about preparation. You only will get better in time with more experience. Even Lawyers that are practicing now, we are still getting there, we are still mastering techniques in court. There is no way right to do things, you just have to find yourselves”, says Ms. Igua Guba Senior Manager for Westpac.
She mentioned that students should not be hard on themselves, that they will still figure it out when they get into Legal Training Institute (LTI).
Thus, if they do decide to practice in court, then they can spend their time to put in more effort to becoming a better litigator.
She said it takes time and that you are doing what you can now from what you know now so it is okay.
Chambalin Manzanaik LLB4 from the Simul litigators team said he learned a lot from the mooting that when analyzing cases in accordance with the current case you have to be careful on how you apply this case in your submission.
Students who came to watch the moot felt challenged watching this experience and took into consideration what techniques the judges used to the mooters.
“Keep mooting. It is better to get exposed here, get yourself corrected and learn a few tricks here. Everywhere you go you learn. Keep doing what you are doing, they did not go wrong anywhere. It is a learning process. The winner party learns, and the losing party also learns. We all learn at the end of the day as lawyers”, says Mr Desmond Kipa, Principle at Wang Dee Lawyers.
For the grand final the judges expect the students to know more on the law that they are presenting to them, which students need to take note on that when mooting.
Denvil Metil in LLB 4 from the Vindicta team advice students that if you intend to do something, do it well.
Be diligent and pursue in excellence.
In the smallest of things, you make sure to achieve in excellence in the outcomes generally.
