Moot Court is Back for the Fourth Round

Team Justice League after their fourth-round session of moot

The fourth round for the 35th Sir Buri Kidu moot competition concluded on Thursday, July 25th.

This round saw all teams to secure a place amongst the final top eight teams.

The society was privileged to have assistance from Jema Lawyers, Wang Dee Lawyers, Westpac PNG, and Leahy, Lewin, Lowing, Sullivan Lawyers providing them with Judges for the moot session.

“This is my first time appearing as a Judge. They are on the right track with their presentation of each mooter. It is really good to come and judge them and I am looking forward to Judge and impart whatever knowledge I have to them”. Says Naomi Anis, Lawyer of Leahy, Lewin, Lowing, Sullivan Lawyers.

Mooting dates are set on Thursdays to give opportunity to the Sabbath students to take part as well.

It is a good exercise to give to the student a platform to learn how to research their cases more and learn the skills of time keeping.

“I appreciate the idea of having moot competition, because what we learn in school of law is more theorical. So, we need more exposure on how to present ourselves before court, because currently we have the issue of Lawyers not being competent enough before court. Therefore, moot court gives us the avenue to actually practice what we learn in school”. Says Philomina Minroe, Third year Law Student, from the fortes Lexes Team.

The challenge most students feel is balancing their school work and mooting at the same time, which takes time and effort.

Students have learnt that choosing whom to work with and having the team that really supports each other when task are delegated.

However, students still need to participate in more public speaking and read a lot.

Said Jack Kombiwanga, Lawyer of Jema Lawyers.
